09 Project Summary

Dunkirk City Schools

Students will create a PhotoStory project in which they will be responsible relaying information from one section of a chapter to the rest of their class. They will first outline the section of the chapter, pulling out what they consider to be the most important information. Next they will go onto the internet to find pictures that correspond to the information. Using PhotoStory 3 students will download their information and pictures to explain to the rest of the class what their section was about and why it was important.

2.  Clear Purpose and Objective:

To get students to be able break down information from a chapter and to decipher  that  information in a orderly and logical way.

3.  Stakeholders: grade level, who will benefit, who will participate in this project.

18 students from my 8th grade advanced class will be attempting this project.

4.  U.S. History Content Area

Industrial revolution.

5.  Outline Describing Content

6.  Software to be used, internet materials, contacts, etc.

Internet web site on various topics to locate photos.

7.  Level of Student Involvement

100 %

8.  Evaluation process (include students when possible)

I personally was not happy with my students effort on this project. They seemed to struggle, on the outlining phase of the project, trying to decide if the information was important or not. Then some of them did fine on the outlining but choose no to add all their information into the project. I think the after everything was said and done five days to prepare was not enough time maybe seven or eight would be better. I am chalking this one up to a learning experience for everyone involved. Now that the students are a little more familiar with the process they will do better next time

9.  Timeline: how you envision the project being carried out between start up and  conclusion

Day one read and outline the section of the chapter. Day two go online and find pictures  Day three continue to find pictures and start download into PhotoStory.   Day four continue download of information and pictures.  Day five add special effects and music to project.

My project idea was to have the students in my room teach themselves a chapter. I chose the industrial revolution as the chapter; this was done for several reasons. First, the chapter had four sections and that is how many groups I wanted. Second, it is a broad topic which they could bring in a great deal of outside information on. Third, it would be interdisciplinary with several classes. And lastly there would be plenty of photos for them to find from the internet on the topic.

My goal was to have the kids broken into four groups, each group would then be assigned a section of the chapter which they would read, outline, and make notes on what they thought was important information. These notes would then be placed in a Photostory 3 program along with relevant photos and shown to the class. Photostory 3 is a very user friendly program which allows one to add narration, text, photos, music, and some special effects.

Everything went very well in this project until it came time to put information and photos into the Photostory 3 program. All my groups seemed to revert to 2nd grade, they were more interested in being funny then creating a project that I expected they would. During narration they made funny noises and sounds along with funny voices. They were more interested in using special effects than inserting the information they had written out in their outline piece. I even had created a grading rubric which they ignored. I honestly believe that with a different group of kids this idea would work great.

I set aside a 10 to 12 day block of time to complete the project.

Day 1-2 read and outline section of the chapter (making sure to pull out all important information.)

Day 3-4 collect pictures from internet.

Day 5-6 enter information into Photostory 3.

Day 7-8 work on narration, music, effects.

Day 9-12 present to class.
