Project: AU Course: “Teaching American History: Strategies, Materials and Techniques

Fall 2007

“Teaching American History: Strategies, Materials and Techniques”

What was covered?

This course was the second in a set of three courses on teaching American History. This course dealt with the “how” of teaching American History. Participants in the course were introduced to the methods of actively teaching American History.  Direct instructional strategies and planning were thoroughly explained as well at examining the techniques of Understanding by Design. Once the participants fully understood and reflected on Understanding by Design and Differentiated instruction, classroom strategies were explained, reading strategies were explored and writing strategies were reviewed. Also, a short lesson on teaching history through music was taught.

What was of value?

I thought this course was excellent.  Being a “veteran” teacher, there were things that I had not had the chance to explore. I had heard of differentiated instruction and Understanding by Design but had not been formally introduced to them. I know feel very confident using both in my classroom. Many of the reading and writing techniques I have used or been exposed to but this served as a great refresher.

What will be used in future instruction?

I have been using the differentiated instruction since I took the course and I will definitely incorporate many of the techniques in my lesson plans.

How will what I learned/developed contribute to the academic success of the students?

Everything covered in “Teaching American History: Strategies, Materials and Techniques” will help me to improve my teaching. Students will benefit greatly by have more personalized and appropriate lessons. I will also be able to engage more students by offering them different way of learning. This course has reminded me of what I love about teaching Social Studies and how I like to teach the subject.
