Reflection on my “Hellmira Prison Camp” WebQuest

I learned a great deal about the Civil War prison camp that was in Elmira, New York in order to create my WebQuest project. I spent hundreds of hours in research and quite frankly could spend hundreds more. It was fascinating to learn our local history and how it tied in with national events. I plan on doing research on other local historical events that I can tie into national history so this project is just the beginning of a much larger enterprise.

The most rewarding part is yet to come as I have not yet been able to do the WebQuest with my students. My school’s computer network lost the project four times so I had to recreate it. I took a 15 hour course through GST BOCES to learn how to create the WebQuest and found it to be extremely helpful. I had not realized the time investment this project would entail nor the extreme disappointment when the project had to be done over and over again. I’m very relieved to have finally completed it. Now, I also have a number of local resources I can use for future projects so I’m excited to begin my next project on the burning of the Indian village here in Chemung.
